Grandpa's Letters

Recently I have been typing up my Grandpa's war letters. It has been QUITE the project because I think he wrote a letter for every day that he was in the war but it has been a lot of fun because he passed away when I was young and I get to know him better through his letters. I feel like I have gained a relationship with my grandpa even though he is passed on. I can't wait to meet him again and talk about "the old times" and all his adventures. He is such an incredible man that has given so much to his family. I sure do love him.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

"I had my physical yesterday. They found me to be a super duper super man with a bum right leg."

"The air corps is a joke. Imagine 18 & 19 year old kids, who can do nothing but shoot a machine-gun, wearing four or five stripes and pilot wearing bars which rate them as high as the army's doctors."

"I’ve been here at the dispensary doing a little typing today. I’ve finished all the work I was assigned so I’ll just type out a note until the sergeant gets back. Boy this is a honey of a machine, Dad. I wish you had one like it. It’s a Royal and runs smoothe as can be. Of course the operator is a bit out of practice so the machine is bound to make mistakes no matter how good a machine."

"I’ve got to take all my shots over again. I had three today. I’ve really got some muscles."

"It’s raining like blazes, and has been for about five hours. This would wash Sanpete away."

"About 19 years ago I’ll bet you didn’t dream you’d have a boy in the army in 19 years, or that there would even be another war. I guess I’ve been a lot of trouble in the last 19 years, but as Mother’s Day nears, I want to thank you for being such a fine mother and for bringing my brother and sister into the world. I know that no other soldier has a finer mother than you, Mom. When I was home, I was always anxious to confide in you, and now your letters help me solve my problems."

Grandpa even sent newspaper clippings in his letters just like he did to all of us. Anyways I hope that you enjoy these as much as I have been. I'll let you all know when it is done. It will be really nice.
