December 25: Thoughts on Christmas

Christmas is such an interesting time of year. It's basically the biggest holiday of the entire year. Every family takes time to put up decorations, trees, lights, buy gifts, exchange, Christmas parties, make gingerbread houses, cookies for Santa, send out Christmas cards, etc.
I love Christmas! The memories that come with it, the people that it brings together, the opportunity to give and share with one another.
This year has been interesting for me because I had a huge burst of "nesting" and got basically all my Christmas stuff done early and I had the time to enjoy the Christmas season. Along the same lines, recently I have started to feel very pregnant and yet still have the responsibilities of full time work, keeping the house clean...the responsibilities of life.
Then yesterday, as I was working my third night shift in a row, on the holiday, with an exhausting board for the third night in a row, I began to think about Mary. I started to think about the trials she went through to bring our Lord and Savior into this world.
I would imagine that Mary was a kind, gentle, beautiful woman that was very humble and thoughtful. I would imagine that she hardly complained and as they made their way to Bethlehem and all they could find to stay in was a stable...that she made the best of it. I doubt she was comfortable. I bet she got a lot of kicks to from her child. I bet she knew that she would have the child very soon and wouldn't be in the comfort of her home.
I began to think last night about all that she sacrificed of herself to bring her child into this world. It makes me appreciate the holiday season just a little bit more I guess.
With all the hustle and bustle that goes about to make sure that we have everything ready for our family and friends, I hope you take time to really think about why we celebrate christmas. "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn...For unto us is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour which is Christ the Lord."
Merry Christmas to everyone!
