The Hunger Banquet

Preston took me to the 20th Annual Hunger Banquet at BYU this year. It was very interesting and turned out to be a lot of fun. BYU did a great job at putting it together.
Everyone was required to buy an $8 ticket, however you didn't know which "class" you would be assigned to until you got there. It was divided as it is throughout the world with 10% upper-class, 20% middle-class, and 70% lower-class. Of course we were assigned to the lower class....until they saw that beautiful belly of mine. "If you want you can move up to middle class." I'm telling you, there are definite advantages of being pregnant.

The lower class was seated tightly on the floor on cardboard and old blankets while the middle class sat on fold out chairs around the peripheral.

This is the lower-class revolt that happened right in front of us.

People walked around with signs antagonizing the lower-class. It actually was pretty funny. They also had "tourists" who would try to take pictures of the lower-class people and screamed if anyone came close to them. These two girls tried to sale people seats to a higher class.

And of course the higher class was seated at beautiful tables right up at the front with servers and a three course meal.

There was entertainment for the night....

And a great meal. The lower-class was given a few tortillas, rice and beans to share between two people. They also got a water bag to drink from.
Middle-class was given a hot dog, chips and a soda. I think I would have gone for the tortilla meal if I would have known I'd get cheetos and orange soda. Ugh! However, I can't complain at a hunger banquet so I ate it all up.
I think higher-class got salad for their first serving, lasagna and vegetables for their main course, and ice cream for dessert. But they were so far away, I couldn't quite tell.
As the entertainment was going on, the volunteers went around trying to sale extra food to anyone that wanted it. All the money went to certain international organizations so you knew that every dollar you spent went to a good cause.

Last but not least, the speaker for the night was Martin Burt, former mayor of Asuncion, Paraguay and now founder and CEO of Fundacion Paraguaya. He was an incredible speaker and commended BYU for their efforts at fighting hunger.
All in all, it was a fun night and we had a lot of fun. Especially going to Panda Express right after to get some real food. We are pretty blesssed!
