Fire Station

Our good friends invited us to go to the local fire station with their preschool group.  We went to a local fire department that wasn't nearly as busy as some of them around us.  Boy, were they great!  The captain of the fire station did the tour and was phenomenal.  He first wanted to do a little safety lesson for all the kids.
He had one of the mom's get dressed up in all the get-up of a fire fighter. He explained that if your house is on fire and the fire fighters come to save you, they may look a little scary in all of their clothing, but really they are just friendly people, like this mom!  He told the kids that they didn't need to be scared to come to the firefighters during an emergency.
Then he talked to the kids about smoke detectors and explained to them that it was like a nose.  It "sniffs" all day looking for smoke. And if it ever detects that there is smoke in the air it will make a loud noise (he set off the alarm) and tell everyone in the house "There's a fire, get down on the ground and get outside."  So this is a picture of the kids 'practicing.' The sheet is the smoke and the kids had the crawl underneath the smoke to the fire fighter.  What a great thing to practice and to teach the kids.  You could tell that they were really catching on.  We even went home after and pointed out all the "noses" in our house.
Then they let the kids walk through the fire station and see where all the fire fighters eat and sleep... and most importantly, where they keep the fire trucks!  They were so nice to let the kids walk through the fire truck and then let each kid individually hop into the fire truck seat and drive.  Carl couldn't stop talking about this.
The kids had so much fun!
They even let the kids go through the Ambulance too.  Boy, I don't think they realized how happy they made all of these kids!  Thank you again for such a great day!
