This weekend, we had the privilege to go to the Olympic Oval to play a little...yep you guessed it! CURLING. My brother of course was the instigator and we had a BLAST! And, I would like to add that it wasn't as easy as I had thought. Especially that darn sweeping part. Chad and Abbi came as well as well as some friends of ours. It was great.
I got this part down real well...and quite enjoyed it actually. You can tell by the sweet face I am pulling.The basic idea of curling is you throw these granite stones ($17,000 a set and only made in two places) down the ice with much grace and finesse.
You try to "curl" it just right so that as it comes to the end you can get as close to the "button" as possible. It's looks like a target at the end.
Preston is dang good at it too. For those of you who have played boccie (?) before, the scoring is much the same. Whichever team has the closest throw to the "button" gets a point. If you have two throws from the same team that are closer then the other team, you get two points.
Abbi was awesome at sweeping. And Chad was great at cheering on Abbi to sweep harder. The sweeping part is used to help it go a little bit further. The ice is slightly rough and the sweeping helps to put friction under the granite stone and help it get to just the right part.
There is a vice skip and a skip who are at the end yelling at you for when you should sweep and stop. They also tell the thrower which direction to go and how much curl to put to it.
And Jon was the experienced one in the crowd. The teacher actually recognized him and asked him to help teach us all. ha ha! He made it look a lot easier than it really was. (Yes..I fell on my fanny a few times)The vice skip and skip throw last and try to hit the opponents stones away from the "button." That's about it!
The following night, they had the Utah Winter Olympics. We didn't make it but a friend of ours took the gold. Next year. I am practicing my skipping skills for next year. We are going for the GOLD. Watch out Rob!

Curling is the most AMAZING sport ever! Seriously, Hali and I would be a great addition to your team. We are both phenomenal curlers. Call us when you are ready to take over the curling world!
